How to Add Existing Taxonomies to WordPress Custom Post Types

This article covers how to add existing taxonomies to a custom post type, and how to make that custom post type show up in those taxonomies’ archive pages. Last week, we debuted Courses, a new way for us to thoroughly teach topics in WordPress development. Courses are just regular old posts for now, but we’re transitioning them into being their own custom post type. This has a number of advantages, such as making it easier to have a “Courses-only” archive page. However, even though they’ll be their own custom post type, we want Courses to make use of three of…

Innovating WordPress Themes

Recently, Tom McFarlin brought the idea of innovating WordPress themes to center stage. I always find his posts thought-provoking and I felt this one in particular warranted a blog post of my own. Sorry for not leaving you the comment love, Tom. The following isn’t intended to debunk his idea of innovation or why we should or shouldn’t be thinking about it. What I’m about to discuss here is something that, as a product developer, I bake into the philosophy behind our product line at Slocum Themes. For better or for worse, a lot of this stems from my time growing…

Why Daan Tol, new owner of WPLift, paid $205k for a WordPress blog

WPLift, a popular WordPress blog/review site, was recently acquired for $ 205k USD through a sale on Flippa. It’s one of the few WordPress blog sites that was able to “stick around” and survive the noise of this crowded publishing market. One reason being Oli, the creator of WPLift, put in the effort and dedication to publishing content. That dedication and consistency is what drove up the value of the sale — something that could be quickly overlooked. I’ve tried a handful of times to book Oli on the show to no avail, but excited to meet the new owner, Daan…

Automattic Acquires Majority Stake In Pressable

Automattic now owns a majority stake in Pressable, a managed WordPress hosting company. Though Automattic has been a primary shareholder in the company since April, Vid Luther, CEO of Pressable, handed over his shares. Because Luther owned 37 percent of Pressable, this is officially an acquisition. When asked about his departure, Luther explained how hard he was working without seeing much result. “This is the best thing that I could have done for my family, or myself,” Luther said in an interview with Post Status. Automattic has acquired several WordPress companies since 2007, when it bought significant shares of Gravatar. Since then,…

In June 2015 Deque, an accessibility consultancy, open sourced aXe, its accessibility rules engine for automated web UI testing. aXe is a compact JavaScript library (~100 KB) that executes automated accessibility tests inside your testing framework or browser. WordPress Plugin Directory No Longer Accepting Frameworks

Today the WordPress plugin review team issued a reminder for what they said is a long-standing, unwritten rule: frameworks are not allowed in the official directory. In a post tiled “Please do not submit frameworks,” Mika Epstein outlined the reason behind the rule: At this time, we are not accepting frameworks as we don’t feel frameworks, boilerplates, and libraries are appropriate for the Plugins Directory. We require that plugins be useful in and of themselves (even if only being a portal to an external service). And while there are many benefits to frameworks and libraries, without plugin dependency support in…
